That's the setup for "Come to Daddy. a film that keeps changing direction so often that it's almost a miracle the filmmakers don't give us tonal and narrative whiplash. Instead, screenwriter Toby Harvard and director Ant Timpson (making his feature debut) have crafted a film that's as clever as it is strange. It's pretty strange, especially after the floor almost literally drops from beneath Norval, revealing how much of a lie his current situation is and, indeed, his entire life has been. Advertisement Before that moment, though, we follow Norval as he arrives at a remote location via bus, walks through the woods, and finds his absentee father's beach-side home. His father drew him a map so that Norval could find his way. This isn't just a man who has left his family behind. He seems determined to leave the entire world behind. After some hesitation, Norval knocks on the door. After a long pause, Gordon ( Stephen McHattie) answers it. There's the quick introduction, which seems odd under the circumstances, although we—and Norval, for that matter—easily can dismiss that on account of the three-decade separation. Norval doesn't remember what his father looked like, and the father surely won't recognize his son, especially if his sudden departure and choice of home are any indication of how well Gordon has kept up with his family in the intervening decades. The two men hug—a good start and, well, the only good moment between these two characters for the rest of the story. Over the next couple of days, the two men never connect. Norval tells his story, how he has had problems with alcohol dependence, almost committed suicide, and currently lives with his mother in her fancy Beverly Hills home. Things seems to be working out now, though. He has stopped drinking, and he's something of a big deal in the music industry. He even has a gold cellphone designed by a famous singer—one of only 20 in the whole world. Gordon, meanwhile, hears about his son's alcohol problem, and he responds by making a show of a long pour from a wine bottle at dinner—moaning in delight as he takes a big sip from his glass. He makes a big game out of calling Norval's bluff when the son says he knows Elton John. Gordon doesn't just have to call out his son's lies. He has to embarrass his own kid to make some kind of point. As for that cellphone, it ends up in the water, and Gordon jokes that, now, there are only 19 of them in the whole world. Some other weird things happen, too. Gordon is often on the phone at night, whispering about some kind of deal with an unknown caller. When father and son agree to go for a swim, Gordon stays behind, and while floating in the ocean, Norval is startled by a rock that comes quite close to hitting his head. The son chalks up all of this to the fact that Gordon is an alcoholic, who was probably drunk when he wrote the letter and now resents the presence of a son with whom he wants nothing to do. Even then, though, something is seriously off about this reunion. The verbal conflicts suddenly turn physical in one key moment, and at this point in describing the characters and the plot, there is really nothing to do but to stop. Describing more would be unfair, because Harvard has almost nothing but surprises left in his narrative arsenal. Here's what can be said: The film takes this father-son dynamic to increasing extremes, and the rest of the plot mirrors that snowball-down-a-hill effect. The house has a couple of secrets to discover, including some hidden mementos that at first suggest the father whom Norval meets was a very different man at some point in the long-ago or very recent past, as well as a hatch in the floor in the middle of the living room. Norval's visit becomes even less amiable, which would have seemed impossible given Gordon's descent from passive-aggressive resentment to flat-out homicidal rage. The sudden appearance of a group of goons from not-so-dear, old dad's past, though, can force that kind of re-evaluation on how bad a situation can become. The vital thing is that Harvard's screenplay never cheats. There's a twisted sense of logic to everything that unfolds (and sometimes, such as Norval's extra-effort but unnecessary attempts to free someone bound in chains, a warped humor within that twisted logic. There are fights (including one that showcases how tough the cardboard rolls holding plastic wrap really are) and plenty of instances of sneaking around, outside the house and at a nearby motel, where Norval has to maneuver quietly past some people sleeping peacefully after an orgy. Timpson stages each of these scenes with straightforward efficiency. He's smart enough to know both that the humor comes from the assorted scenarios, without any extraneous directorial playfulness, and that there's still tension to be mined in even the most absurd situations. The mixture of demented humor and thrills works in "Come to Daddy"—not only because each complication logically follows from a previously defined complication or scenario, but also because there is sincere pain, longing, and desperation at the heart of Norval's situation. One of the best albums of all time. I beginning to think all these other reviews are fake and from the cast or friends of. This film is NOT COMEDY, it is NOT HORROR and it is not a THRILLER. This film is beyond meanlingless with absolute no purpose except to be another form of art. The dialogue is nothing special, the character building is nothing special, there was 0 laughs, there was 0 fear or anything really horror related - blood and death doesnt mean something is horror genre. And there was no thriller aspects, 1 single twist in the film and it happens in the first half of the film. Dont waste your time.

There is almost no character development, but we have a good sense of the few people we meet. I wouldnt say it jumps the shark at all, but its twits, for the most part, are laid out at your feet as dialogue. Because of this it never quite reaches the heights of what I think is a potentially great premise. It has all the trimmings of a quality film with great acting, production etc. Its strange however, that with those elements on board I think its run time is a little short. It could have stayed a little longer so they could explore a few more depths of the characters and created a better arc overall for the narrative, or idea, that is at the heart of this story. With all that said I would still recommend it as it sets an awkward tone that Ive rarely seen in films. For someone who watches a lot of movies that, was nice. … Expand.

Thankfully it's not a comedy-horror as you may expect. More of a quirky thriller with moments of over the top violence. Great set-up about a son of fruity hipster appearance looking to reconnect with his brutish estranged father. Solid performance from Wood and McHattie during the first half. Last half plays out fairly typically, not particularly bad, enjoyable enough, but nothing to get excited about. And you thought you had daddy issues. Weigh them against Elijah Wood s troubles in debuting director Ant Timpson s moderately funny and strangely dated gross-out comedy-thriller “ Come To Daddy, ” and you might just award your own old man a “Parent of the Year” prize. Too bad that Woods character Norval shows up at the remote doorstep of Brian (Stephen McHattie) — the guy who had abandoned him and his mother three decades ago — utterly clueless about the senselessness that awaits him and his long-estranged father. The audience is slightly luckier, since Timpson tips off the viewers about the forthcoming crazy ride by kicking his film off with two wildly unrelated quotes about dads: one by William Shakespeare and the other by Beyoncé. If only Timpson (whose previous credits as a producer include the notoriously weird “The Greasy Strangler”) had earnestly delivered on that tease with some fresh grip. Instead, the blend of tired jokes and body horror here seems entombed in amber, as every lacerated scalp, loudly broken limb, and use of the C-word makes it feel that much less original. If you find yourself amid a dedicated “bring it on” audience up for anything, there is surely some retro fun to be had with this brand of cartoonish and completely unrealistic chamber violence. But while “Come To Daddy” dials up its gruesomeness to maximum noise, even the collectively therapeutic “ewws” and stress-release claps wear thin, as the onscreen gore starts feeling like a bore. This is both a bummer and a shock, as “Come To Daddy”, written by “The Greasy Strangler” co-writer Toby Harvard (based on an idea by Timpson) sets the madness in motion stylishly with enough intrigue and suspense in its first act. We meet the 30-something Norval as he hysterically drags a suitcase across isolated coastal landscapes in some distant Oregon town, following painstaking instructions on a map, hand-drawn by his father who had apparently mailed him an out-of-the-blue invitation for a visit. Clearly clothes-conscious with a hat that indicates arrogance and sporting a goofy “medieval-chic” haircut (minus the “chic” part) Norval gets established as an amusing, out-of-place image at once. Soon enough, the Beverly Hills-dwelling, snobby DJ reaches daddys idyllic cabin, which looks like a circular UFO from outer space. Except, Brian seems peculiarly startled at the sight of his son. Still, the duo falls into a routine in no time. Often dangerously drunk, Brian intimidates Norval with threatening language and mannerisms, destroys Norvals precious Lorde-designed phone and refuses to reveal the reason for his surprise letter. A recovering alcoholic, Norval indulges in egotism in return, bragging about his cutting-edge gigs. “I am someone you cant pigeonhole. Do I produce blazing beats? Yes! ” he boasts during a conversation, crowing about his alleged connection to big names like Elton John. The funniest segment of the film is this pissing contest between the pair, during which cinematographer Dan Katz stays close to the subtly aggressive mimics of the two committed and equally superb performers to hilarious effect. Without spoiling the central twist, suffice it to say that Norvals quiet escape to the country costs him a lot more than he had bargained for. As the story progresses with mild surprises, a number of new characters shift its shape from a darkly funny thriller to full-on slasher. In that, “Come to Daddy” becomes something in the vein of a cheesy 80s horror flick by way of Martin McDonagh or an early Quentin Tarantino film, with plenty of blood and guts spilled. While this sounds like a winningly escapist combination, the script falls short of the wit and smarts needed to do the premise justice. Still, the delightfully scene-stealing Kiwi comedian Madeleine Sami adds a surprising amount of depth to an otherwise petty and overwhelmingly masculine package with a memorable scene — it feels like an unfortunate cheat when she doesnt return. Moreover, a dauntingly jawed Michael Smiley and a placid Martin Donovan deliver two knowingly over-the-top performances as once-friendly foes. To international audiences more accustomed to the relative restraint of Chinas arthouse exports, “Only Cloud Knows, ” a slab of toothcrackingly sentimental mooncake from regular national box-office conqueror Feng Xiaogang, might come as a bit of a surprise. This episodic, determinedly winsome love story, told in honeyed flashback, follows a grieving husband as he journeys to the places of significance to his beloved, dead wife across their adoptive New Zealand homeland. The locations are stunning, the actors attractive and Feng — initially a comedy director, though hes branched out in recent years to historical epics like “Back to 1942” and dramas like 2017s record-breaking “Youth” — did not get where he is without learning a thing or two about playing an audiences responses. So while your rational mind is rebelling against its more shameless manipulations, your hands may well be scrabbling through your bag for tissues, napkins, store receipts, candy wrappers — anything to mop up a flood of saltwater tears so deep, its possible a whole pod of whales (a recurring motif) lives within it. It starts with a shellshocked Sui Dongfeng, aka Simon ( Huang Xuan, from Fengs “Youth”) moving soundlessly through his Auckland home trying to summon the ghost of his pretty wife, Yun Luo aka Jennifer ( Yang Caiyu, also from “Youth”. She does briefly appear, but after a chaste hug and a bit of tidying (misty though its view of fateful, soulmate-style love is, the film has a fairly retrograde idea of a womans role) and slips away again, leaving Simon bereft. And so he embarks on his very, very sentimental journey, though New Zealands picturesque North and South Islands, to revisit the places where they made such sweet memories, and to scatter her ashes. Although this modern-day journey is the films basic narrative, it is really just a framing device for a movie that, like Simon, lives in the past. And so the real tale is told in two gluttonous series of flashbacks of which, awkwardly, the first is set later in time, detailing the newlyweds moving to a small town called Clyde and opening a Chinese restaurant, while the second covers the couples meet-cute as young immigrants to Auckland from Beijing. These reminiscences are suspended in the amber romance of DP Zhao Xiaodings outrageously pretty photography, petted ceaselessly by Dong Gangs omnipresent, emotive score, and usually cued by someone happening into a slant of golden light, assuming a faraway look and saying, “I remember the very first time I met her…” If Dongs music spares us a harp glissando to transport us into the past, its almost the only trick in the old-school melodrama box it does not use. The most curious facet of “Only Cloud Knows” might just be its incuriosity. Despite an evident entrancement with the ribbons of roadways that trail through New Zealands rolling hills, and the cattle-dotted fields that surround the couples new home, there is very little here that approaches anything like commentary on the struggles or rewards of the Chinese expatriate lifestyle in New Zealand. Though we know they both grew up in Beijing, we never find out exactly why either moved away, much less why specifically to this far-flung land. In Clyde they make exactly one local friend, Melinda (Lydia Peckham) a sparky waitress with an adventurous spirit whose world travels occasionally give Jennifer a little sigh of envy. The rest of their time is spent making the restaurant a success, doing nice little things for each other and playing with their smart, scruffy, rescue dog, Blue. At this point, their oddly self-contained life is one of such picture-perfect tweeness that wed know tragedy — human and canine — awaited even if the lightly portentous minor-key piano accompaniment didnt basically skywrite that fact across the massive South Island heavens. Across this and the earlier time frame, in which Jennifer and Simon meet while both renting rooms from kindly widow Mrs Lin (Feng regular Fan Xu) the film traces their friction-free relationship with plodding fidelity. But though the story is loosely based on the real-life experience of one of Fengs close friends and collaborators — or maybe because of that — it feels ethereally divorced from reality. Jennifer, despite Yang Caiyus best efforts and unerring ability to locate the loveliest light to gaze sadly into, is a sliver of a character, whose air of haunted melancholy, and need for “protection” are frequently mooted, but never really explained, until the films unsatisfying coda. That final revelation is, however, delivered by the wonderful Zhao Shuzhen, so beware that just when you might have put away the tissues for good, the grandmother from “The Farewell” is going to show up to wring a few more out of you. Schematic and manipulative as it is, as a kind of team-effort between the New Zealand Tourist Board and whatever the Chinese equivalent of Hallmark is, “Only Cloud Knows” is, in the moment, undeniably effective at jerking tears. If it does anything like the numbers that Fengs films have done in the past, expect reports of mass dehydration. File sharing is the act of providing and receiving digital files over a computer network. File sharing can be accomplished using a variety of tools, but in the 21st century peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and file-hosting sites are very popular. Before P2P, Usenet was often used for file sharing. Like many internet users, fans use file sharing to gain access to television shows, films, music, and other media canon source. However, fans also use file sharing to distribute fanworks such as vids and podfic. In P2P sharing, files are stored on and then served by the personal computers of the network's users. Most users both provide (upload) files and receive (download) files. In the past, peer-to-peer sharing primarily meant using proprietary software such as the famous Napster client; much of the current use of the term refers to the process commonly known to as "torrenting. referring to the swarming technology of the popular BitTorrent protocol. Before the advent of web-based tools like Youtube, Sendspace or bittorrents fans sometimes used their own computers as download sites for FTP transfers of the files. For example the Puppy Shelter in popslash fandom was an important resource in the early growth of the fandom. Although file sharing in all forms, especially BitTorrent, is under attack by governments, corporations, and agencies who claim it violates copyright (and that it is piracy) the actual legality of and copyright protections afforded to various file sharing methods vary widely by country. In many regions, file sharing methods largely lie in an as-yet-untested legal grey area. However, many torrent and sharing sites have been shut down in an effort to crack down on copyright violations, although frequently such sites simply migrate to new addresses in other countries. International sharing Fans often rely on torrenting to be able to watch shows from other countries they might never see on networks in their own countries, or to watch them sooner than they might be able to otherwise. Lag times of a network from one country licensing a series from another country can vary from weeks to years — in animanga fandoms, licensing times of 2 to 4 years or more between original Japanese release and domestic release of a given title are commonplace — while discussions about an episode happen immediately after an episode is shown; there is not much more than a window of perhaps a few days for fans who want to participate in a fandom with open canon without getting spoiled. For example, 24 was the most downloaded show in the UK in 2005 [1] before the UK network changed its programming and started to air the episodes close to the air date in the US. Now, for the first time ever, the seventh season of the show airs simultaneously in the US and Germany too. [2] Another example is Doctor Who, which has at times aired days, weeks, and even months earlier in the UK than it has in the US. Occasionally US shows are shown earlier in Canada or Britain than they are in the US (especially for series airing on the Sci Fi channel. In these situations US fans have to rely on international methods to participate in a fandom for an American show. International fans may also prefer downloading instead of waiting for a domestic version due to quality reasons. If they watch the domestic version aired on local television, it may be dubbed into the domestic language rather than the original one; many fans don't like to watch a dubbed version because they feel it takes away from the quality of the show. Also, when UK shows are shown in the US, they are often heavily edited, with multiple scenes shortened or deleted in order to make room for commercials. The fifth season of Doctor Who was edited in this fashion when shown on BBC America, to many fans' dismay. [3] 4] Tape Trading Two paper zines that were precursors to file sharing are APA-VCR and I Finally Found It. They contained information and the addresses of fans who had video tapes of shows to trade with other fans. There was also The Video Co-op Library for tape trading. Trading tapes was helpful to fans who could only watch a show at the whims of erratic syndication, if at all. These traded video tapes (and sometimes sound tapes) were the only way to see (or hear) an episode of a show that was as close to the original as possible. Just after the show went off the air in 1979, the Starsky and Hutch letterzine S and H was rife with complaints from fans who hardly recognized the episodes they were shown by their local television stations. Entire scenes were gone, endings were cut, and the show sometimes started a scene or two into the broadcast. From issue #5 about one episode, We expected the scenes of Hutch getting the nasty needle to be cut, but 'they' didn't stop at that. The episode jumped from the alley scene directly to the one at Huggy's when H&H are playing checkers. Everything else in between was gone. Fans begged other fans for tapes of the show, fearing other such canon massacres. For fans of anime in countries outside Japan, tape-trading and copying were standard practice [5] until the turn of the 21st century brought FTP and XDCC into more common use [6. Tape trading was also popular in the early Hanson fandom. Tapes of their television appearances (as well as bootleg cds/cassettes, posters, magazine articles, fan photos, and more) were traded amongst fans.
