2:19 - 2:58 is kinda trippy. Is that Rubber Johnny's uncle? The one they don't talk about. Mark Dujsik February 7, 2020 His father left when he was five years old. 30 years later, Norval Greenwood ( Elijah Wood) receives a letter from his old man, hoping that the son will visit the father. That's the setup for "Come to Daddy. a film that keeps changing direction so often that it's almost a miracle the filmmakers don't give us tonal and narrative whiplash. Instead, screenwriter Toby Harvard and director Ant Timpson (making his feature debut) have crafted a film that's as clever as it is strange. It's pretty strange, especially after the floor almost literally drops from beneath Norval, revealing how much of a lie his current situation is and, indeed, his entire life has been. Advertisement Before that moment, though, we follow Norval as he arrives at a remote location via bus, walks through the woods, and finds his absentee father's beach-side home. His father drew him a map so that Norval could find his way. This isn't just a man who has left his family behind. He seems determined to leave the entire world behind. After some hesitation, Norval knocks on the door. After a long pause, Gordon ( Stephen McHattie) answers it. There's the quick introduction, which seems odd under the circumstances, although we—and Norval, for that matter—easily can dismiss that on account of the three-decade separation. Norval doesn't remember what his father looked like, and the father surely won't recognize his son, especially if his sudden departure and choice of home are any indication of how well Gordon has kept up with his family in the intervening decades. The two men hug—a good start and, well, the only good moment between these two characters for the rest of the story. Over the next couple of days, the two men never connect. Norval tells his story, how he has had problems with alcohol dependence, almost committed suicide, and currently lives with his mother in her fancy Beverly Hills home. Things seems to be working out now, though. He has stopped drinking, and he's something of a big deal in the music industry. He even has a gold cellphone designed by a famous singer—one of only 20 in the whole world. Gordon, meanwhile, hears about his son's alcohol problem, and he responds by making a show of a long pour from a wine bottle at dinner—moaning in delight as he takes a big sip from his glass. He makes a big game out of calling Norval's bluff when the son says he knows Elton John. Gordon doesn't just have to call out his son's lies. He has to embarrass his own kid to make some kind of point. As for that cellphone, it ends up in the water, and Gordon jokes that, now, there are only 19 of them in the whole world. Some other weird things happen, too. Gordon is often on the phone at night, whispering about some kind of deal with an unknown caller. When father and son agree to go for a swim, Gordon stays behind, and while floating in the ocean, Norval is startled by a rock that comes quite close to hitting his head. The son chalks up all of this to the fact that Gordon is an alcoholic, who was probably drunk when he wrote the letter and now resents the presence of a son with whom he wants nothing to do. Even then, though, something is seriously off about this reunion. The verbal conflicts suddenly turn physical in one key moment, and at this point in describing the characters and the plot, there is really nothing to do but to stop. Describing more would be unfair, because Harvard has almost nothing but surprises left in his narrative arsenal. Here's what can be said: The film takes this father-son dynamic to increasing extremes, and the rest of the plot mirrors that snowball-down-a-hill effect. The house has a couple of secrets to discover, including some hidden mementos that at first suggest the father whom Norval meets was a very different man at some point in the long-ago or very recent past, as well as a hatch in the floor in the middle of the living room. Norval's visit becomes even less amiable, which would have seemed impossible given Gordon's descent from passive-aggressive resentment to flat-out homicidal rage. The sudden appearance of a group of goons from not-so-dear, old dad's past, though, can force that kind of re-evaluation on how bad a situation can become. The vital thing is that Harvard's screenplay never cheats. There's a twisted sense of logic to everything that unfolds (and sometimes, such as Norval's extra-effort but unnecessary attempts to free someone bound in chains, a warped humor within that twisted logic. There are fights (including one that showcases how tough the cardboard rolls holding plastic wrap really are) and plenty of instances of sneaking around, outside the house and at a nearby motel, where Norval has to maneuver quietly past some people sleeping peacefully after an orgy. Timpson stages each of these scenes with straightforward efficiency. He's smart enough to know both that the humor comes from the assorted scenarios, without any extraneous directorial playfulness, and that there's still tension to be mined in even the most absurd situations. The mixture of demented humor and thrills works in "Come to Daddy"—not only because each complication logically follows from a previously defined complication or scenario, but also because there is sincere pain, longing, and desperation at the heart of Norval's situation. He just wants to know why, and the universe chuckles at thinking something so complicated could be that simple. Reveal Comments comments powered by.

[2] 3] Plot [ edit] Norval Greenwood ( Elijah Wood) a privileged musician who still lives with his mother in a Beverly Hills mansion, receives a letter from his estranged father asking him to come and visit him. Norval, who has not seen his father since he was five years old, makes the trek to a secluded cabin overlooking a lake in Oregon. His father, David, is initially welcoming to him, but soon begins to display aggressive tendencies and taunt and insult Norval, even threatening him with physical violence. All this comes to a head one afternoon when David attacks Norval with a meat cleaver, but in the ensuing struggle, David has a heart attack and immediately dies. Due to a lack of space at the local morgue, Norval is forced to keep his father's body in the cabin with him after having it embalmed. He attempts to stay in the house long enough for his mother to come and get him, but is repeatedly awakened by loud sounds from somewhere beneath the house. Finding a hidden family photo album, Norval sees a photo of his father and realizes that the dead man is not his father at all. He then finds a hidden hatch in the house leading to a bunker beneath, where he finds his real father bloodied and chained up. On his father's orders, he attempts to kill a man, Jethro, who arrives to torture his father, but Jethro escapes, promising revenge. After finally freeing David, Norval is forced to carry him upstairs into the house. David reveals to Norval that after he left him and his mother, he fled to Bangkok, where he and a group of three other men - Jethro, a large man named Dandy, and Gordon, who was pretending to be Norval's father - kidnapped the daughter of the richest man in Thailand and successfully held her for a large ransom. David fled the group with their shares of the money and has been on the run ever since, funding Norval and his mother's expensive way of life with the money. Dandy arrives at the house and attempts to kill Norval, but Norval stabs him in the genitals multiple times with a barbecue fork, then suffocates him with plastic wrap before beating him to death with the rest of the roll. Norval helps David leave the house, but Jethro returns armed with a crossbow. David advises Norval to hide in Jethro's trunk and kill him when he least expects it; Norval obliges, riding along to a motel where Jethro has arranged a meeting with a prostitute. While Jethro and the prostitute are engaged in a BDSM session, Norval steals the motel keys and a check spindle, slashes Jethro's tires, then attempts to sneak into Jethro's room through an adjoining room. Upon spotting him, the prostitute holds Norval in a headlock while Jethro stabs him several times with the spindle, then leaves. The prostitute is horrified that she is an accessory to Norval's death, but Norval stirs and exits the motel, finding Jethro has crashed his car into a sign that has partially decapitated him. Jethro reveals to Norval that his mother was a prostitute who both David and Jethro slept with before Norval stabs him in the exposed part of his brain with the check spindle; Jethro exhales "Arthur. before collapsing dead. Norval, wounded but alive, walks on foot back to the house where he left his father and lays down next to him on the lakeside. Norval apologizes to his father for never letting his mother get over him, and David weakly touches his son's hand. One of the best albums of all time. I beginning to think all these other reviews are fake and from the cast or friends of. This film is NOT COMEDY, it is NOT HORROR and it is not a THRILLER. This film is beyond meanlingless with absolute no purpose except to be another form of art. The dialogue is nothing special, the character building is nothing special, there was 0 laughs, there was 0 fear or anything really horror related - blood and death doesnt mean something is horror genre. And there was no thriller aspects, 1 single twist in the film and it happens in the first half of the film. Dont waste your time.

The problem is these elements never real come together and congeal as a whole. While it didnt seem like a surface level plot with just skin deep points of interest, it was a little I wanted to give this movie a higher score as a lot of the individual parts that make up the film are great. While it didnt seem like a surface level plot with just skin deep points of interest, it was a little disjunct in the way the story unfolds. There is almost no character development, but we have a good sense of the few people we meet. I wouldnt say it jumps the shark at all, but its twits, for the most part, are laid out at your feet as dialogue. Because of this it never quite reaches the heights of what I think is a potentially great premise. It has all the trimmings of a quality film with great acting, production etc. Its strange however, that with those elements on board I think its run time is a little short. It could have stayed a little longer so they could explore a few more depths of the characters and created a better arc overall for the narrative, or idea, that is at the heart of this story. With all that said I would still recommend it as it sets an awkward tone that Ive rarely seen in films. For someone who watches a lot of movies that, was nice. … Expand.

Popular reviews More Approached this one pretty blindly, basically just knowing Elijah Wood was in it and that I wanted to watch it because he was in it haha. Well it's a weird, wild movie that goes to some very strange places for sure. I enjoyed the dark humor, and it can be downright brutal at times too. I really liked the score too, eerie, often sort of whimsical; a great fit. I wasn't completely into some of the directions the story wound up going in, but I do give it credit for doing something different. I had a good time. i think Elijah Wood should play moody e-boys with daddy issues more often. it is  very entertaining. elijah wood cosplaying as an e-boy (that half-baked skrillex haircut! those chipped black nails. in a slow taught domestic daddy issues thriller set along the scenic oregon coast that suddenly goes balls to the wall (literally) insane. yeah i'm gon have to stan on that one Come to Daddy As twisted and unpredictable only a title Come to Daddy could be. B+ Best Films Of The 10's" Twisted, funny, suspenseful, shocking & violent. While I wouldn't call this an all out dark comedy its got its moments. I didn't know where it was going and the story is pretty original. It runs a little slow upfront though and I kinda wanted it to be even more insane at points. Still though, this was a pleasure... The back half made up for any slow parts easily and its just ridiculous enough without going overboard and feeling stupid... Possibly the strongest opener to FrightFest since The Guest. Darkly funny, bizarro, eye-wateringly vicious (never seen scissors and plastic wrap put to such brutal use. and impossible to second guess. It's got a mean streak as wide as a Chelsea Smile, flirting briefly with supernatural and psychodrama moves, before settling into its own psychotic groove. As you might expect, given the title, Oedipus looms large, and it's no surprise that Aphex features on the soundtrack. Not the obvious choice though, 8MM already did that; instead it's an unexpectedly poignant moment that bridges a tonal shift nicely. Fair warning to anyone who cares, I'm gonna be lagging way behind with these FrightFest write-ups and I'll probably be quite laconic. Time is… Recent reviews This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. *Slowly inserts a receipt spike into exposed brain* The dialogue is well written and makes Elijah Wood's character seem like he's reverted back to his 10-year-old self when talking to his dad. However, this felt like two different movies, both of which were great/fun rides, but combined into one with a dramatic tonal shift that was a total surprise. Had the tone been consistent, then it would have worked, but I forgot about the events in the first act while watching the third as there wasn't much overlap. I have a pen. I have a poo. Ah, poo pen. I can say that it opened with a beautiful title card.  My high really exposed the bad dialogue and genre transitions which in turn ruined my high.  The first two acts were great but it really flatlined at the middle where long and uncomfortable violence tried to revive it.  Seemed like the entire story was a collection of unfinished thoughts. The first half was better than the second but it was a lark nonetheless Strange film. The first 30-minutes were fantastic and Elijah Wood was great throughout, but the movie took some strange turns they weren't what I was expecting. It's okay. A few memorable parts, but nothing great. James, released under his main pseudonym Aphex Twin. It was released as a single through Warp Records on 6 October 1997, coinciding with the lengthier extended play release of the same name. A music video for the song was released, which later became infamous for its content. It did, however, get ranked at number one on Pitchfork ' s Top 50 Music Videos of 1997 list. In October 2011, NME placed the song at number 42 on its "150 Best Tracks of the Past 15 Years" list. [2] The song peaked at number 10 on this Danish Singles Chart and number 36 on the UK Singles Chart. Background [ edit] James noted his thoughts on the song in a 2001 interview with Index Magazine, notably being uninterested in its popularity. Come to Daddy' came about while I was just hanging around my house, getting pissed and doing this crappy death metal jingle. Then it got marketed and a video was made, and this little idea that I had, which was a joke, turned into something huge. It wasn't right at all. 3] After its successful release, James claimed that he removed the record from circulation for one week, hoping to prevent it from reaching number one; it peaked at 16. [4] According to AllMusic, the track has been interpreted as a "send-up" of the Prodigy 's hit single " Firestarter. 5] Music video [ edit] The music video for "Come to Daddy" released in October 1997) was directed by Chris Cunningham and filmed on the same council estate where Stanley Kubrick shot many scenes in A Clockwork Orange. [6] The scene is shot around Tavy Bridge Shopping centre, Thamesmead, which was demolished in 2007. [6] Much of the dark underground car parking is now gone. Description [ edit] The video opens with an old woman (played by Carol Lorne) walking a dog in a grimy, industrial setting. The dog urinates on an abandoned television lying on the pavement, causing it to sputter unexpectedly into life, and a distorted and warping headshot of Richard D. James chants the lyrics. This unleashes a spirit, accompanied by a gang of small children, all of whom bear James' grinning face and who appear to inhabit the abandoned buildings. The children go around wreaking havoc, trashing an alley and chasing a man into his car. The thin man (played by Al Stokes [7] emerges from the television, screams in the woman's face, then gathers the children around him. Distinctions and awards [ edit] It is the only music video in the top 50 of The 100 Greatest Scary Moments as voted by Channel 4 viewers in 2003. [8] The video is included on the Directors Label volume, The Work of Director Chris Cunningham. [9] The video was also named the number one video of the 1990s by Pitchfork. [10] The video won the Golden Nica (main award) in the Digital Musics category at the Prix Ars Electronica in 1999. [11] Use in media [ edit] Come to Daddy" was used in the television series Master of None in a scene where Aziz Ansari 's character Dev imagines himself as a parent to two bratty children. Thankfully it's not a comedy-horror as you may expect. More of a quirky thriller with moments of over the top violence. Great set-up about a son of fruity hipster appearance looking to reconnect with his brutish estranged father. Solid performance from Wood and McHattie during the first half. Last half plays out fairly typically, not particularly bad, enjoyable enough, but nothing to get excited about. May 1, 2019 7:47AM PT Ant Timpson's dark, blood-splattered comedy runs out of steam and originality as it follows an urban hipster facing major daddy issues in a coastal Oregon town. And you thought you had daddy issues. Weigh them against Elijah Wood s troubles in debuting director Ant Timpson s moderately funny and strangely dated gross-out comedy-thriller “ Come To Daddy, ” and you might just award your own old man a “Parent of the Year” prize. Too bad that Woods character Norval shows up at the remote doorstep of Brian (Stephen McHattie) — the guy who had abandoned him and his mother three decades ago — utterly clueless about the senselessness that awaits him and his long-estranged father. The audience is slightly luckier, since Timpson tips off the viewers about the forthcoming crazy ride by kicking his film off with two wildly unrelated quotes about dads: one by William Shakespeare and the other by Beyoncé. If only Timpson (whose previous credits as a producer include the notoriously weird “The Greasy Strangler”) had earnestly delivered on that tease with some fresh grip. Instead, the blend of tired jokes and body horror here seems entombed in amber, as every lacerated scalp, loudly broken limb, and use of the C-word makes it feel that much less original. If you find yourself amid a dedicated “bring it on” audience up for anything, there is surely some retro fun to be had with this brand of cartoonish and completely unrealistic chamber violence. But while “Come To Daddy” dials up its gruesomeness to maximum noise, even the collectively therapeutic “ewws” and stress-release claps wear thin, as the onscreen gore starts feeling like a bore. This is both a bummer and a shock, as “Come To Daddy”, written by “The Greasy Strangler” co-writer Toby Harvard (based on an idea by Timpson) sets the madness in motion stylishly with enough intrigue and suspense in its first act. We meet the 30-something Norval as he hysterically drags a suitcase across isolated coastal landscapes in some distant Oregon town, following painstaking instructions on a map, hand-drawn by his father who had apparently mailed him an out-of-the-blue invitation for a visit. Clearly clothes-conscious with a hat that indicates arrogance and sporting a goofy “medieval-chic” haircut (minus the “chic” part) Norval gets established as an amusing, out-of-place image at once. Soon enough, the Beverly Hills-dwelling, snobby DJ reaches daddys idyllic cabin, which looks like a circular UFO from outer space. Except, Brian seems peculiarly startled at the sight of his son. Still, the duo falls into a routine in no time. Often dangerously drunk, Brian intimidates Norval with threatening language and mannerisms, destroys Norvals precious Lorde-designed phone and refuses to reveal the reason for his surprise letter. A recovering alcoholic, Norval indulges in egotism in return, bragging about his cutting-edge gigs. “I am someone you cant pigeonhole. Do I produce blazing beats? Yes! ” he boasts during a conversation, crowing about his alleged connection to big names like Elton John. The funniest segment of the film is this pissing contest between the pair, during which cinematographer Dan Katz stays close to the subtly aggressive mimics of the two committed and equally superb performers to hilarious effect. Without spoiling the central twist, suffice it to say that Norvals quiet escape to the country costs him a lot more than he had bargained for. As the story progresses with mild surprises, a number of new characters shift its shape from a darkly funny thriller to full-on slasher. In that, “Come to Daddy” becomes something in the vein of a cheesy 80s horror flick by way of Martin McDonagh or an early Quentin Tarantino film, with plenty of blood and guts spilled. While this sounds like a winningly escapist combination, the script falls short of the wit and smarts needed to do the premise justice. Still, the delightfully scene-stealing Kiwi comedian Madeleine Sami adds a surprising amount of depth to an otherwise petty and overwhelmingly masculine package with a memorable scene — it feels like an unfortunate cheat when she doesnt return. Moreover, a dauntingly jawed Michael Smiley and a placid Martin Donovan deliver two knowingly over-the-top performances as once-friendly foes. From composer Karl Stevens mischievously eerie score to Katzs playful compositions that maximize colors and sharp contrasts, “ Come to Daddy ” has the look and makings of a high-end production. If only the laughs could also rise to the occasion. While inflating his films genre-bending silliness (perhaps in search of something that cant be pigeonholed like the lead character) Timpson misses out on a dark comedy several shades edgier. Hong Kong FilMart, Asias largest film and TV trade fair, will be postponed from its scheduled date in March to a new slot in August.
